Cause of Tinnitus

The main symptom of tinnitus is a constant ringing or buzzing that can only be heard by the sufferer. It is actually a rather common condition with one in three people experiencing it in some form during their lifetime. If you are experiencing ringing, it's a good first step to get a hearing test and see an ear, nose, and throat specialist. It's important to find what is causing tinnitus so that a treatment plan can be made.

Tinnitus can start is any area of the ear as well as abnormalities in the brain as well as other potential causes. One of the most common causes is due to damage to the hearing nerves, usually after prolonged exposure to loud noises. Aging can also cause tinnitus to develop or get worse. As we get older, our hearing begins to diminish, which can make tinnitus more noticeable. There are a number of theories about how damage to the cochlea (part of the ear that allows us to hear) causes the brain to get confused. It will send signals when there isn't an actual noise, causing tinnitus.

There are also a number of other potential causes for tinnitus. Meniere's disease, brain tumors (acoustic neuroma), hyperthyroidism, and diabetes could all bring on tinnitus. Certain medications also have tinnitus as a possible side effect. These include, but aren't limited to, aspirin, antidepressants, certain antibiotics, and some anti-inflammatories. Make sure to check with a doctor or pharmacist to find out about any potential side effects of medications you may be taking. Often times another drug can be substituted which will potentially not cause tinnitus. Something as simple as earwax buildup could also be intensifying tinnitus. Using a cotton swab could potentially compact the ear wax deeper into the ear instead of cleaning it out. This increases pressure in the ear, a known cause of tinnitus. Ear infections could also increase pressure. In these cases, treating the ear infection will also help relieve the tinnitus.

Most causes of tinnitus can be treated with a proper treatment plan. Getting a proper diagnosis is crucial to find what the underlying cause of tinnitus is, but sometimes it's difficult to find an exact cause. Regardless of it an exact cause can be found or not, a treatment plan should still be laid out. Often times by treating tinnitus in a general manner will treat the cause of tinnitus without you realizing it.
